THE WHAT? It’s official, the north of England has officially been put on the map after Chanel staged its Metiers d’Art event in Manchester. Several road closures were in effect as the French fashion brand constructed an outdoor catwalk in the city’s Northern Quarter leading up to the show.
THE DETAILS The show was teased on the Chanel’s website with a montage by Sofia Coppola, which referenced iconic moments from the city’s heritage, including its link to the suffragettes, iconic football teams and rock heritage.
THE WHY? There’s no doubt that Manchester is having a ‘moment’ right now with the English National Opera relocating to the city. As Chanel revealed on its website, “Creative dialogue is at the heart of every Chanel Metiers D’Art collection. It lies within the work between Artistic Director of the Fashion Collections, Virginie Viard, the ateliers at Rue Cambon, the Maison D’Art at le19M, and connects artists and friends of the house, cities and cultures, season after season.
“Chanel has chosen to present the 2023/24 Métiers d’Art show in Manchester, one of the most effervescent cities of pop culture and an avant-garde one, whose bands, spanning all genres, have changed the history of music.”
